Chartiers Center’s Management Team and Supervisory Staff held their quarterly retreat at the Bridgeville Library on Friday, June 23, 2017. The speaker was Curtis Upsher Jr. from Community Care Behavioral Health Organization. The topic for the all day training was the Social and Cultural Factors in a Systems Approach to Meeting Behavioral Health Needs. He spoke of the disparities in behavioral health related to race and socioeconomic factors. He presented demographics related to service utilization and how it impacted treatment engagement. Curtis generated a lot of conversation among staff with the goal of increasing social awareness. He concluded with an exercise to make staff all more aware of their personal sensitivity to prejudice and assumptions related to how we interact with one another and our consumers. It was time well spent and the conversation will continue when supervisors return to their workplace.
